Safety rules for vehicle sales

The law has safety rules for vehicle sales:

  • Vehicles that are sold to be driven on the roads must meet the legal standards explained in the Motor Vehicle Act and its Regulations. These standards include requirements for lamps, brakes, horn, muffler, mirrors, windshield and windows, safety belts, winter tires, etc. Vehicles that meet those standards can be sold by dealers for transportation.
  • If a dealer sells vehicles that are not suitable for transportation, this must be written in a purchase agreement.
  • If a dealer fails to do these things, it may be misrepresentation.

If you were shopping for a vehicle for transportation but a dealer sold you a vehicle that was not suitable for transportation at the time of the sale, contact the VSA.

If you suspect that your vehicle is not suitable for transportation, you may consider having it inspected as soon as possible. Inspections are done by a mechanic or a designated inspection facility. You can find a location closest to you in the list provided by the Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement agency of BC. Inspections have a cost.
